Forest Code may derail Brazilian target of emissions reduction
Jan 1st 2011 – Although Federal Government has announced the National Policy on Climate Changes, the alterations in the Forest Code can represent the emission of up to 26 billion tons of greenhouse gases and thus affect the Brazilian target of carbon dioxide reduction, according to a Climate Centre report, released in November.
The changes in the Code were presented in a report by congressman Aldo rebelo and approved in a special Chamber commission. During COP 16, at Dec. 14, agrarians tried to include in the Congress agenda the urgency character of the Code, to put it to vote before other projects in 2011, which did not happen in fact.
The amendments include:
